The healers’ bath was busy at this hour. I’d waited my turn and finally gotten a tub. Hulda took the one next to me. She chattered nonstop, and as I washed, I pushed away the unpleasantness of earlier and focused on a single thought, allowing it to hold my attention. I would be spending the night with Kovis! Again!
“You’re not listening,” she accused. “And why are you grinning?”
I startled, then schooled my features. “Oh! No reason.”
Suffice it to say, I became tantalizing prey. And like a prized hunting dog, she sunk her teeth in and wouldn’t let go.
I had to practically run to my room to escape.
My mind wandered to the reason I’d spent last night with Kovis. Father. Would our ruse work? Or would the mare return? If it did, we’d both be
there, both be in danger. The thing would have Father on us in the blink of an eye. I drew a hand to my mouth, envisioning the grim possibilities.
Imagining our lifeless bodies.
I had no other plan. It had to work. It had to!
I tore open my armoire and forced my mind to think on what to wear, on anything but the danger.
My purchases from Madame Catherine’s had arrived several suns ago. My robe, or a casual dress? I technically treated him. If anyone saw me in a dress… Robe, definitely.
That decided, I dithered over the bigger question. What to wear under it. My distraction worked. I could think of nothing else.
That shift. I blushed just looking at it hanging there.
It seemed so innocent. But I knew it to be anything but. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, more like. Was I ready for it?
No. Definitely not.
But the silky fabric and lace called to me. I ran my hand over it. Again. It would have wear marks without ever being worn if I didn’t stop. So beautiful. I had obsessed over it in the privacy of my room since it arrived. Haylan and Hulda had begged to see it, but I’d declined every time.
I asked Kovis to stretch himself. Maybe I should I wear it to stretch myself? I’d been so modest last night. It surprised me. Every instinct had me cover up. I hadn’t even taken my robe off.
I wanted to be more intimate with him. Madame Catherine had coached that men responded to action. And he had, to my passionate kiss. Would this encourage our relationship further?
What would be the harm in wearing it? If I couldn’t handle baring myself, he just wouldn’t see it.
I slipped it on and looked at myself in the mirror.
The sheer material was just that, very sheer. I could easily make out my form and the pink tones of my skin. The sleeveless shift scandalously stopped halfway down my thighs. My nipples pebbled just below the scooped neckline the seamstress had been more than generous with. He’d see nearly all of me without lifting a finger. I blushed. Of course, he’d seen all of me when I first arrived. Although he hadn’t been in any shape to study me.
